The Sun, Press Freedom, Churchill and Hitler.

The Sun's front page carries a quote by Winston Churchill on the importance of press freedom.

Quotes from Gandhi and Nelson Mandela also support The Sun's warning against statutory regulation for the press.

But The Sun is prepared to be balanced and so they provide a quote from someone who was in favour of press control:

Mediaballs suggests this quote from Orwell is far more apt, encapsulating the importance of freedom of the press, whilst acknowledging that freedom is qualified and comes with responsibilities:

If the intellectual liberty which without a doubt has been one of the distinguishing marks of western civilisation means anything at all, it means that everyone shall have the right to say and to print what he believes to be the truth, provided only that it does not harm the rest of the community in some quite unmistakable way.
In other words, print what you like as long as it's accurate and doesn't harm people.

Crowds cheer smoke! No one knows who's pope!

A new Pope has been elected!

Who? No one knows! Who cares. There's a new Pope!

Sky showed us the smoke from two angles, just to confirm it's white smokiness.

Calm down, haven't you seen smoke before?

They celebrated wildly, waving their umbrellas up and down.

This must be the only election in the world where the fact there is a result is celebrated just as wildly as the result itself.

Pope Day 2: Highlights

Here's the most exciting thing to happen at the Vatican City today. A gull sat on the chimney.

Let's see that from a different angle.

Holy Smoke! But what colour is it?

Much confusion on TV and Radio stations just now as the smoke that emerged from the Vatican chimney was neither black, nor white, but sort of lightish grey.

'What does it mean?' They asked.

'They promised us the colour would be obvious' said one disgruntled anchor.

'Is it black or white?' asked the reporter, to himself.

'It doesn't matter' said Michael Jackson.

Barcelona v Milan: A record breaking comeback (if you ignore the 4 others)

ITV Sport made much of the fact that no team has ever comeback from a 2-0 first leg defeat to progress in the Champions League.

That is technically correct, but ignores the fact that teams have come back from a two goal defecit three times and even a three goal deficit once. What's more, AC Milan were the team that surrendered a three goal lead and Barcelona have previously come back from two goals behind.

Sorry to spoil the party.

And the winner is... The Guardian!

In the race to be the first to tweet the sentences of Chris Huhne and Vicky Pryce, the Guardian was the undisputed winner, tweeting the results before any other news organisation.

In terms of the broadcasters, ITV News won the Chris Huhne race, beating Sky by 7 seconds. In the Pryce race Sky's Adam Boutlon won, leaving ITV News trailing in the dust and Sky's official feed languishing a mere 1 behind them.

The BBC were nowhere to be seen. Probably because they're having a meeting to decide on whether the proposed tweet has any semantically troubling issues.

Here are the results:

CHRIS HUHNE RACE (remember winner is at the bottom):

VICKY PRYCE RACE:
